Caught in Action: Making Difference Through Connection

ree

Serco Wellbeing is proud to recognize Maria Franklin as a Caught in Action winner for her outstanding efforts in organizing the Out of the Darkness Walk for Suicide Prevention in Columbia, SC.

Through her leadership and compassion, she helped bring colleagues and community members together to raise awareness, offer hope, and show support for those affected by suicide. Her efforts went beyond coordinating an event—she sparked important conversations about mental health, connection, and the power of showing up for one another.

By sharing updates, inviting participation, and encouraging others to get involved, she helped strengthen our culture of care and reminded us that wellbeing is a shared journey. Each step taken and each story shared brings us closer to breaking stigma and building understanding.

Let’s celebrate this inspiring example of leadership, kindness, and action. Together, we can continue to make wellbeing and mental health a visible priority—at Serco and in our communities.

Could you be next month’s Caught in Action star? Focus on your wellbeing, make a positive impact, and you might be recognized—and rewarded with a $100 reward from Snappy—for your efforts! Learn how you can make a difference and see all our Caught in Action winners!

Congratulations to the October Wellbeing Warrior: Stacy Romnek
ree

Congratulations to Stacy Romnek – the Serco Wellbeing October Wellbeing Warrior! Stacy’s journey highlights how intentional choices can transform every aspect of life—socially, mentally, physically, and financially.

After returning to the United States from overseas, Stacy made a conscious decision to prioritize her family’s health and her own. She found a hotel room with a small kitchen, bought a set of pots, and began cooking meals that supported her body and mind. Drawing on her experience as an athlete, Stacy understands the profound impact nutrition has—not only on physical performance but also on mental clarity, energy, and overall wellbeing.

Stacy’s approach to wellness quickly extended beyond her own household. While preparing meals, she would make extra smoothies to share with new friends, using these moments to connect, build relationships, and inspire others to embrace healthier habits.  She has found joy in giving back, spreading her passion for healthy living to her family, friends, and community. “Wellness is even more powerful when it’s shared,” Stacy says, and her actions show just how true that is.  Through her experience, Stacy also emphasizes the value of Serco Wellness programs, which provide practical guidance, easy-to-follow tips, and resources to make wellness accessible and achievable for everyone.

One of Stacy’s most rewarding achievements has been improving her sleep. Before focusing on nutrition, she often struggled with restless nights and low energy during the day. By making mindful choices to nourish her body, Stacy now enjoys deeper, more restorative sleep and wakes up feeling refreshed and ready for the day.Stacy’s story is a reminder that small, intentional choices can create big changes.

Congratulations, Stacy, for leading by example and inspiring us all to prioritize health, wellness, and connection!

Health & Safety: Think Before You Modify Your Workspace
ree

Think Before You Modify - Facility & Workspace Modifications

Before painting, drilling, sanding, or bringing in personal furniture or workout equipment, pause and check first. Even small changes can introduce fire, air quality, ergonomic, injury potential, or structural risks if not reviewed properly.

Engage Safety and Facilities Early

Not every touch-up or décor update needs approval — but any change that could affect safety, building systems, or compliance does. Before starting, share your plan with your Program Manager, Facilities, and Health, Safety & Wellbeing (HSW) representative. They’ll help assess potential impacts and guide next steps.

What to Watch For:

•    Asbestos & Lead: Don’t disturb older walls or floors without clearance.

•    Air Quality: Painting or sanding can release harmful dust or fumes.

•    Fire & Electrical Safety: Avoid unapproved wiring, outlets, or lighting.

•    Furniture & Equipment: Home-use or workout items may not meet standards.

•    Waste & Clean-Up: Dispose of materials responsibly.

When in doubt, ask before you modify. Partnering with Facilities and Safety keeps everyone — and your workspace — safe, compliant, and functional.

Key Preventive Steps Every Man Should Know:

  • Cancer Screenings Are Critical: Prostate, testicular, and colorectal screenings can catch cancer early when treatment is most effective. Talk to your doctor about what’s right for you.

  • Mental Health Isn’t Optional: Suicide is the leading cause of death among men under 50. Stress, depression, and anxiety are treatable—seek support and use resources like Serco’s EAP with TELUS Health.

  • Avoid Risk Factors: Limit alcohol, quit smoking, and practice safe behaviors to protect your long-term health.

  • Move More, Live Longer: Just 30–60 minutes of activity per week can dramatically reduce risk for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Join Movember: Moving for Men’s Health Total Wellbeing On-Demand activity to start moving earn Wellbeing Tickets!

Make Health a Habit, Not a Chance: Whether it’s for you or someone you love, taking preventive steps today can make a world of difference tomorrow.
