Mental health matters every day, but May gives us a dedicated space to reflect, support, and start meaningful conversations. Just like our physical health, our mental wellbeing needs care, attention, and compassion. May is a powerful reminder that it’s okay to not be okay, and that reaching out, checking in, and slowing down are all important acts of self-care.  Let’s use this month to create space for open conversations, deeper self-awareness, and a little more kindness—toward ourselves and others.

In this edition, find practical tools, thoughtful insights, and supportive resources to help you prioritize your mental wellbeing—whether that means managing stress, building emotional resilience, or simply taking a moment to breathe.

In this issue:

Prioritize Your Mental Wellbeing: Resources You Can Rely On

At Serco, we believe that mental health matters — this month and beyond. When we care for our mental wellbeing, we’re more present, more resilient, and better able to support those around us.

In today’s fast-paced and often demanding environment, stress can build up quickly. Whether you're on the frontlines, behind the scenes, or supporting others in their roles, it’s easy to put your own needs on the backburner. But your mental wellbeing deserves attention — not just in moments of crisis, but as a regular part of your self-care.

That’s why we’re committed to creating a culture where it’s okay to take a break, speak up, and ask for support — without stigma or judgment. You don’t have to navigate challenges alone. We’re here to give you the tools and resources to take charge of your wellbeing.

6 Tips to Support Your Mental Health at Work

  • Set Boundaries: Protect your wellbeing by defining clear work-life boundaries. It’s okay to unplug after hours!

  • Check-In with Yourself: Make it a habit to pause and assess how you’re feeling mentally and emotionally. Self-awareness is the first step to self-care. Recognize the signs of stress and burnout – and take action early.

  • Reach Out for Support: Don’t underestimate the power of a check-in. A quick conversation can help ease stress and build a sense of support. Talk to a trusted colleague, manager, or mental health professional when you need help.

  • Practice Self-Care: Prioritize sleep, movement, and healthy habits to maintain resilience.

  • Encourage a Culture of Support: Be a mental health ally by listening, supporting, and advocating for a stigma-free workplace.

  • Use Your Tools: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, there’s no need to go it alone. Leverage the resources available to you.

Support You Can Rely On: Toolkit and Resources

To support you in your mental health journey, TELUS Health offers free and confidential resources tailored to your needs:

This Mental Health Awareness Month, take a moment to check in with yourself. Reach for support when you need it. And remember — caring for your mental wellbeing is not just a one-time action, it’s an ongoing priority.

Because you matter. Your wellbeing matters. And we’re here for you — every step of the way.

April Wellbeing Warrior: Elizabeth Garrett
ree

Elizabeth faced a major setback in 2023 when she tore her ACL and MCL, requiring surgery followed by nine months of rigorous physical therapy. The road to recovery was long and challenging, but even after completing therapy, she realized her journey was not over. While she had regained mobility, her knee still lacked strength, and the weight she had gained during her period of inactivity placed additional strain on her joints. She knew she had to make a change not just for her knee, but for her overall well-being.

Determined to find a sustainable path forward, Elizabeth sought medical advice and underwent health checks. However, she soon realized that medicine alone would not provide the solution she needed. In November 2024, she turned to a nutritionist for guidance. Through this consultation, she discovered that her metabolism had slowed significantly due to her diet and inadequate food intake. Her body needed a reset, and she committed to making meaningful changes.

Elizabeth focused on increasing her lean protein intake, drinking more water, and becoming more active. With dedication and perseverance, she successfully lost 25 pounds, an achievement that not only eased the strain on her knee but also left her feeling revitalized. She was amazed at the transformation, proving to herself that change was possible at any stage in life, even when she initially doubted it.

She credits the Wellbeing program for playing a crucial role in her journey. Seeing others set and achieve their own health goals inspired her to take a different approach and commit to her personal wellness.

Elizabeth’s story serves as a powerful reminder that self-reflection is key to change. She encourages others to ask themselves: “Are you truly happy with your current lifestyle? Is this the path you want to continue on?” For her, the answer was clear—she wanted more, and she took the necessary steps to achieve it. Change is always possible with the right mindset and support system.

Congratulations to Elizabeth on her incredible progress, strength, and determination. Her story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible with commitment and courage. Keep shining—you’re showing us all how far perseverance can take us!

Preventive Health: Women's Health Week
ree

Women’s Health Week is a reminder of the importance of prioritizing your health—both physical and mental. Preventive care is key to maintaining well-being and catching potential health issues before they become serious. By focusing on prevention, women can live healthier, longer lives and address concerns early on. Here’s how you can embrace preventive care for better overall health.

1. Routine Health Screenings. Regular screenings are crucial for identifying health issues early, even before symptoms arise. These may include:

  • Breast Cancer Screenings: Mammograms are essential for detecting breast cancer early, typically recommended every 1-2 years for women over 40.

  • Cervical Health: Pap smears and HPV tests help detect abnormal cells or signs of cervical cancer, usually starting at age 21 and continuing every 3 years.

  • Blood Pressure Checks: High blood pressure is a silent threat to heart health, so regular checks are crucial for managing the risk of heart disease.

2. Immunizations. Vaccines aren’t just for kids—they’re an important part of preventive health for adults as well. Ensure you’re up-to-date with:

  • Flu Vaccine: An annual flu shot helps protect against seasonal flu.

  • HPV Vaccine: Prevents human papillomavirus, which can lead to cervical cancer.

  • Shingles Vaccine: Recommended for women 50 and older to prevent shingles, a painful condition caused by the chickenpox virus.

3. Healthy Lifestyle Choices. Preventive care isn’t just about screenings and vaccinations—it’s about fostering habits that support long-term well-being. Some simple, everyday actions include:

  • Regular Exercise: Engaging in physical activity can help manage weight, improve mood, and lower the risk of chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease.

  • Balanced Diet: Eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins helps maintain a healthy weight and supports your immune system.

  • Mental Health Care: Don’t forget your emotional health. Stress management, therapy, and maintaining a good work-life balance are just as important as physical health.

4. Preventive Care for Reproductive Health. Women’s health needs evolve over time, and reproductive care is a vital part of preventive health:

  • Contraceptive Care: Whether you're planning for a family or not, understanding your birth control options is key to managing your reproductive health.

  • Menopause Care: As you approach menopause, monitoring changes in your body and seeking guidance on managing symptoms like hot flashes, mood changes, and bone health is crucial.

5. Stay on Top of Your Doctor Visits. Make sure to schedule annual check-ups with your healthcare provider. These visits are an opportunity to review your overall health, ask questions, and address any concerns you may have. Even when you feel fine, routine visits can help catch potential health issues early.

This Women’s Health Week, take time to focus on prevention. Routine screenings, a healthy lifestyle, staying on top of immunizations, and proactive reproductive care can make a big difference in maintaining your long-term health.
