Preventive Health: Taking Action Against Cancer
Cancer touches nearly everyone—personally, through a loved one, or within their community. The World Health Organization reports that lung, breast, colorectal, and prostate cancers are among the most common worldwide, contributing to nearly 10 million deaths each year. But prevention has power: an estimated 30-50% of cancers may be preventable through greater awareness, healthier lifestyle choices, and reduced exposure to environmental risks.

Reducing cancer risk begins with awareness and everyday choices that support long-term health. Knowing your risk factors, staying current on screenings, and talking with your health care provider can help support prevention and early detection.
Here are some prevention strategies to consider. Because each person and each type of cancer are unique, this is not a complete list, and it’s important to talk with a health care provider about what is right for you.
Build daily habits that help support a healthy body weight.
Stay physically active by sitting less and finding simple ways to move more.
Choose nourishing foods, including vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, and other nutrient-dense options.
Limit or avoid alcohol.
Protect your skin from UV rays by using sunscreen, seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding tanning beds.
Talk with your health care provider about recommended vaccines and screenings based on your age, health history, and risk factors.
Prevention starts with knowing what you can do to lower your risk and making informed choices that support your health. From staying active and protecting your skin to keeping up with recommended screenings and vaccines, small steps can add up over time.
Know your risks. Make informed choices. Talk with your health care provider. Your health is worth the investment.

Support a Colleague Through Life's Unexpected Moments

Summer is winding down, vacations are coming to an end, and many of us are settling back in to our regular routines. If you have vacation hours you don't plan to use, consider putting them toward something meaningful: helping a colleague who may need extra time away from work during a difficult time.
Through the Vacation Donation Program, eligible employees can donate accrued vacation hours to coworkers facing a serious medical or personal challenge. Your donation can give someone valuable time to focus on their health, family, or recovery without the added worry of being away from work.
Who Can Receive Donated Hours?
Eligible employees may request donated vacation hours if they:
Have received a serious medical diagnosis, experienced a medical emergency, or been affected by a major disaster.
Are caring for an immediate family member—mother, father, spouse/partner, or child—who has experienced a medical emergency, major disaster, or serious illness.
Have exhausted their sick and vacation time balances. (Sick leave exhaustion is not required in California.)
How to Donate
Employees who wish to donate must:
Donate in one-hour increments, with a minimum donation of four hours.
Maintain a vacation balance of at least 40 hours after donating.
Be in active working status.
Need Donated Hours?
Eligible employees may request up to 40 hours of donated vacation from the vacation donation bank.
Another Way to Make an Impact: Serco People Fund

Can't donate vacation hours? You can still help a fellow Serco employee. The Serco People Fund provides another way to support colleagues experiencing financial hardship due to unexpected life events.
