Diabetes Awareness Month: Are You at Risk?

When people think about diabetes, they often assume they would know if something was wrong. The reality is that many adults with prediabetes don't experience noticeable symptoms. That's why National Diabetes Month is an important reminder to take a proactive approach to your health.
Prediabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet in the diabetes range. Without lifestyle changes, it can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. The good news? Many cases of type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed through healthy habits and routine preventive care.
Know the Risk Factors
You may be at a higher risk for type 2 diabetes if you:
Have a family history of diabetes
Are physically inactive
Have high blood pressure or high cholesterol
Are overweight or obese
Are age 45 or older
Have been told you have prediabetes
Simple Steps That Support Prevention
You don't need to make drastic changes to improve your health. Small, consistent actions can make a meaningful difference.
Move more. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week.
Choose balanced meals. Fill your plate with vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and whole grains.
Get enough sleep. Quality sleep supports healthy blood sugar levels and overall wellbeing.
Manage stress. Chronic stress can affect both physical and mental health.
Schedule preventive screenings. Regular checkups can help identify health concerns before they become more serious.
Your Health Is Worth the Check-In
Diabetes Awareness Month is a great opportunity to pause and evaluate your health habits. Whether it's scheduling a preventive care visit, taking a daily walk, or making a healthier choice at your next meal, small steps today can have a lasting impact on your future wellbeing.
