Preventive Care: Melanoma & Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Take a few minutes to protect your skin—today and all year long.

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers, but it’s also one of the most preventable. Small, consistent habits—like protecting your skin from UV rays and checking for changes—can significantly lower your risk, and early detection makes melanoma highly treatable.

Know the ABCDEs of Melanoma

One of the easiest ways to spot potential warning signs is by remembering the ABCDEs of melanoma, a simple guide used by dermatologists to identify suspicious moles or spots:

  • A — Asymmetry: One half doesn’t match the other

  • B — Border: Irregular, scalloped, or uneven edges

  • C — Color: Multiple colors or uneven shading

  • D — Diameter: Larger than a pencil eraser (about 6 mm)

  • E — Evolving: Changes in size, shape, color, or appearance

If you notice something new, changing, or unusual on your skin, it’s important to have it checked by a healthcare provider or dermatologist.

Simple Ways to Protect Your Skin

Protecting your skin doesn’t have to be complicated. These small, consistent habits can make a big difference:

  • Apply broad‑spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day, even on cloudy days

  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours when outdoors, and after swimming or sweating

  • Seek shade during peak sun hours (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

  • Wear protective clothing, wide‑brimmed hats, and UV‑blocking sunglasses

  • Avoid indoor tanning—there is no such thing as a safe tan

Taking a few minutes each month to check your skin and making sun protection part of your routine can help protect your health long‑term. Start small, stay consistent, and take action for your wellbeing—this month and beyond.
