Wellbeing in Action: Meet the First Quarter Winners

Wellbeing comes to life through the choices we make—supporting our communities, pursuing personal growth, and inspiring others to take positive steps toward a healthier life. We’re proud to recognize our Wellbeing in Action First Quarter winners for demonstrating how everyday actions can make a meaningful difference.
Alfonso Rodriquez turned a lifelong dream into reality by pursuing his goal of earning a degree. With support from Serco’s Tuition Reimbursement and Higher Education programs, he persevered through personal challenges and graduated from the University of Phoenix with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, earning a 3.9 GPA and induction into the Delta Mu Delta International Honor Society—an inspiring example of dedication and resilience.
When a winter storm hit Virginia, Doug Galica stepped up to support his community. He volunteered his time shoveling driveways and helping neighbors—especially elderly residents who needed to reach critical medical appointments. Doug also prioritizes physical wellbeing as an active member of a community basketball team and inspires others to stay active and engaged through his YouTube channel.
Beth McNeal is inspiring others across Serco by openly sharing her wellbeing journey on Viva Engage. After previously losing 70 pounds and later regaining some of the weight, Beth chose determination over discouragement. By sharing her decision to restart her health journey. Her message to keep trying and never give up is motivating others throughout the Serco community to take that first step again.
Judith Obiofuma is also encouraging others by sharing her wellbeing journey and lessons learned. Through her Viva Engage post, Judith reflected on how the Go for Gold Challenge inspired her to strengthen her routine—not only maintaining her consistent workouts but also focusing on improved nutrition, tracking meals, and taking intentional breaks to recharge during busy days.
Congratulations to our First Quarter Wellbeing in Action winners for leading by example and showing how small steps can create a ripple effect of positive change across our Serco community.

Safety in Motion: Safety Travels With You

April’s focus on Road & Driving Safety is a reminder that staying safe on the road is part of taking care of yourself. Most work‑related vehicle incidents are caused by other drivers, so being alert and having a simple plan can make all the difference. Spring roads bring changing weather, work zones, and plenty of unpredictability, but a few calm habits help keep the drive smoother: eyes up, fewer distractions, extra space, and patience when things get hectic.
These steady choices protect you, your passengers, and the crews working along the roadway — and they support your sense of confidence and wellbeing on every trip.
And a quick reminder: anyone driving a Serco or customer vehicle must be a Serco Authorized Driver. Reach out to Heidi McCaffray or Kathy Reeves if you need help.
Safety truly travels with you — wherever the road leads.
Preventive Health: Drink Less for Better Health

April is Alcohol Awareness Month, a time to learn how alcohol can affect your health and reflect on habits that support overall wellbeing. Research shows that higher alcohol consumption increases the risk of several cancers—including breast, liver, colon, and throat—and is also linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, liver disease, digestive issues, and a weakened immune system.
The good news is that even small changes can make a difference. Many people who reduce their alcohol intake experience benefits such as improved energy, lower blood pressure, reduced anxiety, and a lower risk of chronic disease. Health experts recommend moderation—no more than two drinks per day for men and one for women (a standard drink is 12 oz beer, 5 oz wine, or 1.5 oz spirits).

Whether you’re trying to drink less or stop altogether, consider the steps below to help you achieve your drinking goals.
Bring awareness to current drinking habits by tracking alcohol consumption.
Be mindful of temptations such as people, places, activities, and emotions by making a plan to stay ahead of them.
Modify drinking behaviors with simple adjustments, such as drinking slow, choosing beverages with lower alcohol content, alternating alcoholic drinks with water, and enjoying mocktails.
Develop new routines. Try alcohol-free days, weeks, or even months to see how you feel, and explore alternative ways to unwind such as physical activity, engaging in favorite hobbies, trying a new activity, or enjoying special nonalcoholic drinks.
Interested in making a plan to drink less? Consider these resources:
Check your alcohol intake: Use this quick tool from the CDC to better understand your current drinking habits.
Find additional support: Visit the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for a list of free and confidential resources.
Access employee resources: Explore tools and support available through the TELUS Health EAP, or reach out directly for confidential guidance.
Take this month as a chance to review your habits, learn about the impact of alcohol, and make thoughtful changes that support your wellbeing every day.
